Birmingham’s best kept secrets

For decades the awe and wonder that can be found within industrial Birmingham has been one of the UK’s best kept secrets, and what is hidden within Birmingham, well, that is interesting. From its humble beginning as a market town, it wasn’t until the 18th century that Birmingham rose to prominence and now it is to many, most notable for Cadbury’s chocolate factory, located in idyllic Bournville. Yet Birmingham is much more than a chocolate factory; there really is everything you could hope to find in the humble hub called Brum. For fashion lovers, history buffs and culture nuts, Birmingham has more options than a Woolworth’s Pick and Mix. So here’s my beginners guide to just some, of Birmingham’s best kept secrets.

For the culture vultures Birmingham has everything to offer in the most incredible quantities. From pre-Raphaelite art that can be found within the grand Birmingham Art Gallery to the impressive Staffordshire Hoard; an awe inspiring collection of 1,500 gold and silver pieces, of 7th century Anglo-Saxon origins; Birmingham Art Gallery offers an insight to beauty beyond imagination. In addition to the Birmingham Art Gallery, The Barber Institute, a place once quoted by The Observer as, “one of the finest small art galleries in Europe”, boasts a collection that provides a comprehensive cover of all of the great genres and styles. Including in this are masterpieces created by Botticelli, Giovanni Bellini, Poussin, Claude, Manet, Monet and Van Gogh.

For food look no further than The 90 Day Cafe, located in Birmingham city centre’s Great Western Arcade. A thriving independent café that offers a constantly evolving menu of organic and fairtrade meals, cupcakes and treats; enjoy locally sourced sausage sandwiches, a Thai Green Curry or one of their 23 different cupcake flavours. Better still, try the full English breakfast; believe me, you won’t regret it. Located in Birmingham too is the best Fish and Chip shop across the land, if you don’t believe me, then believe this; The Great British Eatery was voted England’s best Fish and Chip shop 2010. Combining maximum taste and quality, with a price that won’t leave your credit card crying, The Great British Eatery is your one stop shop for the perfect fish supper.

So what about shops? With the famous Bullring casting an imposing figure over Birmingham it’s impossible to describe the best of Brum without mentioning just a few of the great shops out there. The Diskery, for all you vinyl record lovers (it’s making a come back you know) is a piece of prime Birmingham history. An impressive 40 years old and one of Birmingham’s best record shops; The Diskery has even had a documentary made about it! But if that’s not your thing, then what about chocolate? The Chouchoute Chocolaterie located in the Great Western Arcade has earned a reputation as a trusted visionary in the world of fine chocolate. Its luxury treats are created using the finest ingredients and come in an astounding number of flavours. A gastronomical masterpiece; a trip to Brum isn’t really a trip to Brum without a visit.
